“I felt love and a sense of hope right away.”
I was living in another state with my 6-year-old son, when we had to get away from a domestic abuse situation. We left in a hurry, literally leaving everything behind.
We came to OKC, where I had some friends and thought I had a place all lined up … but then that situation fell through. So there I was, a single mom with a little boy, and no place to go.
Our homelessness had many different looks — sometimes in a hotel, sometimes at a shelter, sometimes sleeping in a tent and sometimes even on the streets.
Fortunately, a local police officer saw us and kindly brought us to City Rescue Mission. I’d never been here before, but almost from the first moment, I could tell this was the right place for us. I felt love and a sense of hope right away.
If it wasn’t for the Mission, my son could have been placed in foster care since I was facing homeless-ness. Instead, they kept us together, and I’m eternally grateful. Not only that, but the staff is helping me land on my feet and get my life in order. They’re helping with paperwork, IDs and job training. We’re looking for an affordable home, and they even helped get my son placed in school.
I’m so thankful for everything the Mission does for us. And I’m especially grateful for friends like you who make it possible!
