When Steven moved here with his wife a few years ago he was optimistic about the future. They had wanted a change for their children, and Oklahoma City seemed like the perfect place to raise a family.
But the health insurance Steven was using didn’t transfer over, and he lost access to the pain management regimen that had kept the effects of an old leg injury at bay.
The pain became more than he could bear, and Steven turned illicit substances to cope. Soon Steven spiraled as a chemical dependence took hold. He and his wife lost their home and split up. She left Oklahoma, and Steven found himself homeless and helpless, struggling to survive on the street for the next 18 months.
One day, he heard about City Rescue Mission from a friend. Steven was apprehensive at first, but as soon as he met our staff members, he knew he had come to the right place to heal.
“When I walked in, it was like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders,” he recalls. “I knew I’d found a place to finally get my life together.”
